PETALING JAYA: The national-level Deepavali celebration will be held in Klang on Nov 24.

Klang MP Charles Santiago said his constituency was chosen to host both the state and federal-level celebrations this year.

The state-organised Deepavali celebration was held at Tugu Kelana last Sunday while the Deepavali 2018 open house by the Tourism Ministry will take place from 10am to 11.30pm at Kompleks Sukan Pandamaran on Nov 24.

“A later date was chosen owing to the current wet spell and thunderstorms,” Santiago said.

Events such as traditional performances by local artistes and a Deepavali idol singing contest have been lined up.

Batu Kawan MP Kasthuriraani Patto, who was on her Deepavali rounds in her constituency, said the celebration was toned down this year.

“Besides the wet weather, I suppose the people are heeding the advice by the Health Minister to go easy on sugar during festivities,” she said.

Last year, the national-level celebration was held at Ladang Infoternak Sungai Siput in Perak.

In Nibong Tebal, Penang Deputy Chief Minister II Dr P. Ramasamy said a spirited multiracial Malaysia could be seen during festive open houses.

“The uniqueness of Malaysia is its multiracial people and the spirit of togetherness.

“These open houses are meant for the people from all races to come together and enjoy the celebration, and I am glad that the number of guests here is increasing,” he said during his Deepavali open house at his home in Villa Mutiara, Simpang Ampat yesterday.

Among the over 100 guests were DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang, Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, state secretary Datuk Seri Farizan Darus, state exco members Datuk Abdul Halim Hussain and Zairil Khir Johari and Penang Island City Council mayor Datuk Yew Tung Seang.

The guests were treated to an array of local Indian cuisines.

Meanwhile, five Deepavali babies were delivered at the Lam Wah Ee Hospital in Jalan Tan Sri Teh Ewe Lim, Jelutong.

Fashion designer Aden Yong, 36, and his wife Tam Sook Ling, 32, welcomed their second son at 1.39am on Deepavali Day.

“He is an Alleycats baby!” exclaimed proud grandfather Tam Fook Meng, who is an ex-Alleycats band member.

“He was supposed to be due on Nov 12, but he chose to arrive today,” Yong said, adding the baby weighed 2.925kg.

Royal Brunei Airlines plots Borneo onto destination marketing strategy

Chand: taking the lead in destination marketing with digital strategy as well as a multi-destination drive that packages Brunei with East Malaysian states of Sarawak and Sabah

Royal Brunei Airlines (RBA) has rolled out a B$5 million (US$3.6 million) destination marketing campaign as part of a fresh strategy to boost inbound arrivals into the sultanate and drive yield and load for the airline.

Since the campaign’s launch in late September, the airline had taken a lead in international destination marketing with the multi-destination approach of promoting Brunei with the East Malaysian states of Sarawak and Sabah, RBA’s CEO Karam Chand told TTG Asia on the sidelines of the 10th APG World Connect in Monaco.

This marks a change from previous campaigns by Brunei Tourism where the sultanate was promoted as a mono destination.

Furthermore, RBA’s Borneo strategy is expected to get a boost from the upcoming Kuching service – which will resume from December 28 following its suspension in 2011 – to target longhaul leisure travellers transiting in Bandar Seri Begawan on its London-Melbourne route.

RBA has introduced its non-stop flight to London from Bandar Seri Begawan since end October, reducing the journey time by 3.5 hours each direction as the airline no longer flies via Dubai. It has also recently expanded its flight network to Taipei, Narita, Changsha, Nanning and Kuching.

Karam said: “We are running a 100 per cent digital campaign for at least two years. We have engaged M&C Saatchi Singapore to be the advertising agency and drive the initiatives forward… We are also targeting millennials through digital marketing campaigns.”

The campaign is led by James Millett, who joined the airline as head of digital and marketing in August. He was previously the director of marketing, digital and brand at EasyJet.

As the airline secures the “right people” to make a push for the destination, Chand remarked that the airline is looking forward to the NTO “to get their funding and skill sets sorted out”.

For now, the airline and Brunei Tourism are working collaboratively, with the latter overseeing the training of tourist guides, licensing matters and the setting of standards for the industry.

Karam said the airline will also organise travel trade missions in targeted markets with the relevant private sector stakeholders.

Bigger budget allotments for Malaysia’s tourism in the works

Grants to encourage private sector players to promote the destination overseas

Malaysia is planning generous budget allocations to tourism, including RM100 million (US$24 million) in matching grants to support the private sector in promotional and marketing campaigns overseas.

The country’s finance minister, Lim Guan Eng, announced plans for the grant scheme while tabling the 2019 Budget.

The scheme could help the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture Malaysia to achieve its target of 30 million foreign tourist arrivals by 2020, contributing RM100 billion in tourist receipts. Last year, the tourism industry contributed 14.9 per cent of the national GDP or RM201.4 billion.

For some inbound tourism players, grants are much needed as international marketing can be a costly exercise.

Uzaidi Udanis, president, Malaysian Inbound Tourism Association, said: “The cost of promotions is not cheap. For example, to participate at WTM in London, each tour operator has to spend at least RM30,000 for three days.”

Moreover, Sutra Group of Companies managing director, Syed Razif Al-Yahya pointed out the private sector’s complementary role in destination marketing.

He explained: “Tourism Malaysia may not have a physical presence in certain overseas markets due to budget constraints but inbound operators strong in those markets could apply to use the funds to do their own marketing.”

Lim further shared that half the country’s tourism tax proceeds, estimated at RM50 million, will be shared with the state governments to encourage and assist tourism activities in these states.

In addition, the government will make available RM500 million worth of loan facilities via the SME Tourism Fund with SME Bank at a two per cent interest subsidy. This will assist handicraft makers and homestay operators to expand their businesses.

The finance minister added that the federal government will provide tax free incentives to Swettenham Pier in the form of duty-free shops in a bid to improve cruise tourism.

Moreover, the Langkawi’s duty-free island status will be further expanded and enhanced, while Pangkor Island will become the country’s second duty-free island after Langkawi.

Meanwhile, to encourage domestic tourism, the government proposed to impose a departure levy for all outbound travellers by air starting June 1, 2019.

The proposed rate is two-tiered, RM20 for outbound travellers to ASEAN countries and RM40 to other countries, which the government said is consistent with Thailand (US$20), Hong Kong (US$15) and Japan (US$10).

Cute ‘Kopi-O’ is Perak’s tourism mascot

THE Malayan tapir known as ‘Kopi-O’ designed by a 21-year graphic designer student is now Perak’s tourism mascot.

Wan Sue Khay was among 42 participants who joined the contest to create a suitable mascot for the state government.

The Ipoh lass said she did not expect to win but could not contain her emotions when her design was picked.

“Firstly, the Malayan tapir is an endangered species, and I wanted to create awareness and tell people to appreciate the animal.

“I am calling it ‘Kopi-O” because of its colour, and also because Ipoh is famous for coffee, and most people have this drink to kick-start their morning,” she said after receiving RM5,000, a certificate, a hotel stay and Kellie’s Castle vouchers from State Tourism, Arts and Culture committee chairman Tan Kar Hing recently.

The contest was held between July 13 and Aug 15, and some 42 entries were received nationwide.

A total of 11 others received consolation prizes of RM1,000 in cash, and certificates each during the ceremony.

Tan said the mascot is now the ambassador for the state government’s tourism sector, and the mascot would be used for promotions within and outside the country. He said merchandise items of the tapir would be available soon as well.

“The Malayan tapir can only be found in South-East Asia, and history shows that it has long existed in Perak.

‘One proof is the pre-historic drawing at Gua Tambun resembling a tapir during the Neolithic era,” he said, adding this was why the tapir was chosen as the mascot.

Tan said the tapir mascot is also a step by the state government to conserve wildlife.

He hopes the launch of the tapir as a mascot would enhance the community’s awareness, especially for Perakians to pay attention and contribute towards efforts to protect the tapir.

“According to the Wildlife Department between 2012 and 2017, the tapir is a threatened species that records the highest road accidents in Malaysia,” he added.

Departure tax unlikely to spur domestic travel in Malaysia

$

The Malaysian government is deliberating the imposition of a departure levy on all outbound air passengers starting June 1, 2019 to encourage travellers to take domestic holidays, but members of the travel industry are doubtful that the move will lead to the desired outcome.

When tabling Budget 2019 recently, finance minister Lim Guan Eng introduced the tax and its rationale of encouraging domestic tourism. The proposed levy is two-tiered, RM20 (US$4.80) for ASEAN-bound travellers and RM40 for other countries.

Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents president, KL Tan, believed the departure tax will not have a significant impact on growing tourism and it would not deter travellers who have already made up their minds to travel overseas.
He also pointed out that not all travel abroad is for “leisure” purposes, but also include travel for education purposes, business travel, visiting relatives and friends living abroad as well as for religious purposes such as pilgrimage.

This view is also shared by others in the trade. Stephen Thomas, managing director at Topaz Travel & Tours, said: “Our clients are mainly middle and upper middle class. If they can spend on a holiday to Europe or any other longhaul destination, paying an additional RM40 will not have an impact on their travel decision.”

Manfred Kurz, managing director at Diethelm Travel Malaysia, opined: “Outbound travel may slow down a little in the beginning but people will get used to the departure levy because they cannot get around it.”

To stimulate domestic travel, product owners should create awareness of their attractions through enticing promotional materials, suggested Raaj Navaratnaa, general manager, New Asia Holiday Tours & Travel.

He added: “Relevant government agencies should also study the trends of what Malaysians are looking for and the travelling needs of the younger generation and tailor products accordingly. There is not much information on agro-tourism and the historical site of Bujang Valley lacks exposure.”

THE state is targeting five million tourist arrivals next year with the launch of the Visit Sarawak campaign.

From January to September this year, Sarawak recorded 3.2 million visitor arrivals, a decrease of 13.3% from the same period last year.

“Based on the trend in the past few months, my ministry is expecting 4.5 million visitor arrivals and RM8.05bil in tourism receipts (this year),” said state Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

He said a soft launch of the campaign was held in Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and London.

In his winding-up speech at the sitting, Abdul Karim added that the Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) had sealed an agreement with AirAsia for its plane livery to carry the Visit Sarawak logo on regional routes.

“The agreement also includes advertising at the cabin luggage storage and tray tables on AirAsia and Thai AirAsia starting in December,” he said.

He also said STB had signed an agreement for a strategic collaboration between Malaysia Airlines and Tourism Malaysia London for the campaign to be publicised in the British and European markets through advertisements on London taxis and online packages offering competitive fares to Sarawak by the national carrier.

In addition, he said Royal Brunei Airlines will start a twice-weekly flight between Bandar Seri Begawan and Kuching on Dec 28.

“The impact of this direct flight will go beyond Brunei as Royal Brunei has launched international routes to Bangkok, Hong Kong, Melbourne and London, with smooth connectivity into Kuching.

“And soon it will penetrate China and other Asia Pacific destinations,” Abdul Karim said.

BACKGROUND INFO ON CONTRIBUTION OF SHOPPING ACTIVITY TO ECONOMY

As a sub-sector or segment of the tourism industry, the shopping industry has a significant role to play in the economy. As it is, shopping holds the largest share of tourist expenditures. For January to June 2018, shopping constituted RM13.8 million total tourist expenditures, as compared to RM12.3 million for the same period a year ago, which showed a 12.3% growth.

Shopping is one of the most lucrative sectors of the Malaysian tourism industry.

It has been included in the Tourism National Key Economic Areas (NKEA) with 12 Entry Point Projects (EPPs). To date, Kuala Lumpur has won several international shopping awards including the World’s 5th Best Shopping Destination by Expedia UK in 2016 and the 2nd Best Shopping Destination 2015 for Muslims in the OIC Destination based on CrescentRating and MasterCard Muslim Travel Shopping Index.

Sabah can be health tourism hub, flying doctor service to resume, says state minister

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah has the potential to become the main destination for health tourism in the region, says state Health and People’s Wellbeing Minister Datuk Stephen Wong Tien Fatt.

In his winding-up speech at the State Legislative Assembly sitting on Wednesday (Nov 14), Wong said Sabah had potential to become a player in the health tourism industry because it has recognised private hospitals and tourism destinations that can serve as natural therapy for patients.

The Sandakan MP added that Sabah has hotels and resorts that offer special therapy packages.

“Malaysia has high potential as a hub for health tourism because the country has recognised hospitals, skilled professionals and competitive medical costs.

"That is why, in 2005, the Health Ministry set up a unit to boost health tourism in the country.

“I hope that government and private agencies can boost the promotion of health tourism in Sabah as it has the ability to generate high income for the state,” Wong said.

According to him, only four private hospitals are registered with the Malaysia Healthcare Travel Council namely Gleneagles Kota Kinabalu, KPJ Damai Specialist Hospital, KPJ Sabah Specialist Hospital and Tawau Specialist Polyclinics.

In another development, Wong reiterated that the state government intends to revive the Flying Doctor Service with operations expected to start again in May or June 2019 after the acquisition process for the service is carried out.

He explained that the service will be made available to 11 more villages in Kota Marudu, Tuaran, Penampang and Nabawan that previously were not able to enjoy medical services.

Wong said the flying doctor service was terminated in 2016.

JOHOR BARU: Johor has beautiful islands off South China Sea, with white sandy beaches, million years old rain forest, mangroves and heritage buildings which make perfect settings for film productions.

On that note, state Women Development and Tourism Committee chairman Liow Cai Tung hoped local and international film producers would consider Johor as one of their locations for shooting films.

“We have state-of-the-art Pinewood Iskandar Malaysia Studios for post-production and the state government fully supports film production companies planning to come to Johor,’’ she said in her speech during the opening of the 19th European Union Film Festival here.

Liow also commended efforts to bring the international film screening to Johor, outside the Klang Valley, adding that the move would give people in other states an opportunity to enjoy good films.

She said the screening of 21 critically acclaimed movies from 17 European countries would enable local film-goers to enjoy and experience foreign cultures and lifestyles through the silver screen.

The 19th European Union Film Festival started screening on Oct 18 and is on until Dec 12 in five major cities in the country, namely Georgetown, Kuala Lumpur, Johor Baru, Kuching and Kota Kinabalu.

Among the films shown are The Young Karl Marx (France), Greetings From Fukushima (Japan), Man and A Baby (Finland), Friends by Chance (Italy) and Halal for Beginners (United States).

POKOK karya JOHAN JAAFFAR
(Tersiar dalam Dewan Sastera, September 2017)

SINOPSIS:

Mardiah seorang wanita cantik tetapi hidup malang.

Saya rasa saya kekurangan. Tak diperlukan. Dipandang rendah. Dihina. Tak ada harga diri. Di penjara, saya jumpa diri saya. Saya rasa tenang. Selamat.”

Mengenai Darwis dia memberitahu Mardiah:
“Orang macam Darwis selalu fikir pasal kekurangannya, kecacatannya.

SHAH ALAM: I-City launches its first-ever convention centre as part of its RM3bil tourism expansion masterplan for the development.

This provides a platform for residents and foreign visitors to organise weddings, meetings and events at the convention centre, which is large enough to hold up to 1,000 guests (banquet-seating style) and 2,000 guests (theatre-seating style).

Located at Central Walk in i-City itself, the convention centre has a total gross area of 0.18ha (20,000sq ft) with three halls and 6,500 car park bays.

“Under the Tourism Masterplan, we have the i-City theme park, which started some 10 years ago and a shopping centre, which is scheduled to open next year.

“We will also have three hotels, two more convention centres and a medical wellness hub,” said I-Berhad deputy chairman Datuk Eu Hong Chew during the launching ceremony.

Eu added that with the official opening yesterday, they would be able to package the convention centre, theme park and the hotel as a MICE (Meeting, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions) destination.

Deputy Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Muhammad Bakhtiar Wan Chik said MICE was an important sub-sector of the tourism market.

“I’m always excited to attend launches and events related to tourism, which have an impact on the country’s economy,” said Muhammad Bakhtiar.

He added that with MICE packages, it would attract more business tourism as visitors, especially foreigners, were more inclined to extend their stay or return with their family to explore the country further.
